SUAREZ MAKES PUSKAS AWARD NOMINEES’ LIST

 

Atletico Madrid striker Luis Suarez was one of the nominees on the Puskas Award list released by world football’s governing body, FIFA earlier in the week. The Puskas Award caters to the best goals scored during the course of the year.Luis Suarez was one of the 11 nominees that made list announced on Thursday as far as the latest edition of the Puskas Award is concerned. The nominees for the 2020 Puskas Award were picked by a panel made up of football experts.


Luis Suarez made the list for the backheel lob scored in the colours of during the Spanish La Liga clash with Real Mallorca in December 2019. Apart from Luis Suarez, Tottenham Hotspur attacker Son Heung-Min, Manchester City Women star Caroline Weir, Sophie Ingie of Chelsea Women FC and Leonel Quinonez  of CSD Macara in the Ecuadorian league all made the list of nominees for the 2020 Puskas Award.

Others that made the list of nominees for the awardare Shirley Cruz of the Costa Rican female football team, Girogian DeArrascaeta of Flamengo, French striker Andre Pierre-Gignac who scored a wonder goal for Mexican top flight team UNAL Tigers to make the list. The others are Hlompho Kekana of Mamelodi Sundowns FC of South Africa, Zlatko Junuzovic of Austrian club Red Bull Salzburg and Jordan Flores of Irish club Dundalk.

Luis Suarez played for Barcelona last season but he has switched to Atletico Madrid whom the Uruguayan joined in the summer. He was forced out of the club by new Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman and that prompted the Rojiblancos to sign him for €6m. He recently missed the chance to play against Barcelona in the league after he returned a positive Covid-19 result.

Suarez was conspicuously absent as Atletico Madrid beat Barcelona 1-0 at home in the league courtesy the strike from Belgian international Yannick Ferreira-Carrasco just before the end of the first half. The result derailed Barcelona and their ambitions to reclaim the league title.
